How Chiropractic Care Can Relieve Asthma Symptoms
September 21st, 2009 | by admin |More Americans than ever before say they are suffering from asthma. It is one of this country’s most widespread and costly diseases. In fact, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, every day 40,000 people miss school or work because of asthma; 30,000 people experience an asthma attack; 5,000 people visit the emergency room due to asthma;1,000 people are admitted to the hospital due to asthma;and, 11 people die from asthma.
Asthma symptoms can be produced by allergens or irritants that are inhaled into the lungs, resulting in inflamed, clogged and constricted airways. Symptoms include distressed breathing, wheezing, coughing, and constriction in the chest. In severe cases, asthma can be deadly. Pharmaceuticals may transiently reduce the symptoms of asthma, but there is no medical cure.
Although chiropractic is not a therapy for asthma, per se, recent research published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research catalogued the results experienced by 81 children with asthma who were given chiropractic care. The two-month study disclosed that those under care saw a 45% decrease in the number of “attacks” and that 31% of the those involved in the study voluntarily chose to take less of their medication.
How can chiropractic care help to reduce the frequency and intensity of asthma attacks? What does an adjustment of the spine have to do with respiration? Nervous system impedance is removed through chiropractic adjustments. Almost all of nerves that are in charge of bodily functions exit between the spinal vertebrae and carry on to their destination. The nerves that affect the respiratory system are contained in this network. If hindered, nerves that regulate the diaphragm can have a serious effect on how beneficially the respiratory system functions. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, then, why so many adults and children under chiropractic management report augmented breathing and a reduction in their asthmatic symptoms.
If you or someone you love has asthma, and it is generated by, or exacerbated because of spinal subluxations, chiropractic may be beneficial. Call your chiropractor today and see if chiropractic care can help you to breathe a little easier.
